Eurotrip - first solo travel! Help?

Hey peeps!

I'm currently planning my first ever solo travel beginning of next year and feeling a bit overwhelmed.

I'm going to Tanzania on a tour and instead of flying back to Brisbane, I'll be heading off to Berlin to start off my (hopefully) year-long round-the-world trip. It's a bit optimistic on my part considering the amount of savings I have but gotta keep my fingers crossed!

First leg of my RTW trip is in Europe where I'm hoping to stay for 6 months. I am a photographer/filmmaker by profession which makes me want to stay in each city I'm visiting longer (2 weeks each). Here's a list of cities on my itinerary:

Berlin -> Krakow -> Bucharest -> Sofia -> Santorini -> Sarajevo -> Belgrade -> Budapest -> Bratislava -> Barcelona -> Porto

Here are my questions:

  1. What do you think of my itinerary? I looked at the map and tried to do a full circle as I'm hoping to go to the UK after Portugal.

  2. How should I go about booking flights and accommodation? I'm thinking of just flying with RyanAir between countries and bus/rail/walk within the city. Accommodation wise, I'm thinking of couchsurfing as much as I can as well as staying in hostels. Should I book hostels in advance or am I fine just looking through hostelworld and walking in on the day I arrive to a city?

  3. Re: flights, would I need to always have onward flight tickets around Europe or just a one-way ticket is fine when I arrive?

  4. I've budgeted around AUD5000 for this leg (USD4000). Do you think this will be enough or should I add more? My main purpose of this travel is for work so I will probably do activities every now and again but not top priority.

  5. How cold does Europe get January - March? I've got thermals and layers packed as per my Kilimanjaro climb requirements.

  6. Any other advice for a newbie like me? I'm really, REALLY excited but feeling a bit anxious now that I have to actually plan things. I'm not the most organised person and would usually prefer playing it by ear.

Thanks in advance! :)
